The GCU Golf Course in Phoenix endeavors to enhance the local community with upscale, yet affordable, recreation. The golf course provides a learning environment for GCU business students and serves as the home for GCU Golf student-athletes. Our mission is to position the former Maryvale Golf Course as a community and university asset.

Grand Canyon University Golf Course is seeking a full-time foreman. Under the direction of the golf course superintendent, the hands-on working foreman assists in assigning and scheduling work assignments and staff, overseeing job performance and quality, ensuring completion of work within timelines and daily inspection of course grounds.

What you will do:

  • Open maintenance shop and prepares for daily work to be handled.

  • May be asked to be "acting manager" on premise in absence of golf superintendent.

  • Report golf course condition to golf superintendent or other designate.

  • Manage maintenance and improvement of buildings on golf course premises.

  • Determine priorities, identifies job requirements, assigns staff to specific jobs or projects and oversees work throughout the shift.

  • Resolve issues related to the project, resolves always conflicts and maintains the team concept.

  • Enforce safe working conditions with all job assignments and is responsible for instructing crew on proper equipment use and work methods.

  • May have to operate mowing, portable blowers/vacuums, lawn trimming equipment with related implements, chain saws, brushing saws, chipper and other equipment as needed to maintain course.

  • Maintain high standards of beautification and cleanliness and inspects course and surrounding grounds for needed maintenance and picks up and disposes of any accumulated debris, removes, and repairs graffiti, ensures seating areas and public gathering spots are in good condition, cleans drains, gutters, and troughs.

  • Supervise the planting, trimming, and pruning of shrubs, bushes, hedges, trees, ground cover, cacti, flowers, turf, etc.; may water trees, shrubs, flowers, and lawns and perform irrigation activities.

  • Operate landscaping vehicles including Gators, pick-up trucks, flat-rack trucks, vans, golf carts or other motorized vehicles as needed for hauling purposes and/or trash and debris removal.

  • Remove weeds by various means including by hand and tool or uses unrestricted herbicides and pesticides.

  • May use power wash equipment.

  • Ensure all tools and equipment are kept clean and in good condition.

  • Other duties as assigned.

What you will need:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum of 2 years’ work experience in commercial grounds maintenance/landscaping experience, including crew lead experience

  • Willingness to work overtime, weekends or holidays as needed.

  • Must pass a background check.

  • Knowledgeable in the proper operation of equipment and tools.

  • Knowledge of fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides used in turf grass and grounds upkeep.

  • Skill in operating maintenance equipment.

  • Ability to operate trucks and light motorized equipment.

  • Customer service oriented.

  • Knowledge of agronomy, turf grass science and rules of golf is required.

  • Reliable and dependable and self-motivated with an interest in landscaping and plants preferred.

  • Must be able to work harmoniously with a team of landscape workers.

  • Must be able to perform heavy physical labor on a daily basis and in extreme desert temperatures.

  • Knowledgeable of and willing to follow all safety precautions and security procedures.

  • Basic arithmetic skill when mixing chemicals.
