Job Description

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:  Include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Ensures cleaning supplies and equipment needed for daily shift are available and accessible.
  • Observes safety and security procedures at all times.
  • Performs preventative maintenance check on all equipment prior to use at beginning and end of the shift.
  • Handles floor care, including routine mopping (dry and damp), buffing and burnishing on hard surfaces, stripping,  waxing, polishing,  power washing.
  • Provides floor maintenance; including but not limited to, vacuuming, shampooing, minimum bonneting and extracting carpets, stairwells  which includes concrete sealing and high dusting.
  • Completing daily work logs and/or monthly activity reports.
  • Provide other cleaning services: such as, dusting, routine restroom, office, and classroom cleaning.
  • Assist with new members of team in demonstrating proper floor care procedures.
  • Other cleaning and maintenance duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to understand English and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Must be able to fill out reports/forms to log daily/monthly tasks.
  • Knowledgeable of janitorial products, green cleaning products and cleaning agents and the best uses for such with regard to commercial cleaning as well as the proper disposal of chemicals.
  • Possess considerable knowledge of the operation, use and care of vacuum cleaners, scrubbing machines, polishing machines and general house keeping equipment.
  • Ability to use and knowledgeable of small power tools.
  • Familiarity with OSHA and MSDS requirements and compliance as well as ADOSH requirements.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evening and weekend assignments
  • Flexible, dependable and reliable.
  • Ability work as a team player.
  • Ability to work well in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with students, faculty and staff.
  • Ability to work under pressure and time constraints (due to schedule and last minute job requests)
  • Must be able to physically perform job duties.
  • Ability to work with harsh chemicals

 Education and/or Experience Required:

  • High school diploma, or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ work experience in floor cleaning capacity or related work experience.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record
  • Ability to understand English and follow oral and written instructions.

Physical Demands:  The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodation(s) may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

The following physical demands are estimated by the amount of time spent.  Usually, the amount of time spent will be estimated on a daily basis, but depending on the position could be estimated on a weekly basis or a monthly basis.

Constantly:  60%+ or 5-8 hrs/shift            Occasionally:  10%-25% or 1-2 hrs/shift

Frequently:  25%-60% or 4-5 hrs/shift      Rarely:  <10% or less than 2 hrs/shift

  • Work entails approximately 70-80% standing and walking.
  • Constantly moves about the campus and buildings and offices to perform providing cleaning services.  Moving about may entail walking, operating a gator or golf cart or other means to get from one location to another.  Moving about also entails maneuvering the campus buildings which may include hallways, offices, classrooms, laboratories, lavatories and/or climbing stairs.
  • Work constantly involves the use of cleaning chemicals, compounds, solvents or biodegradable chemicals which may be inhaled or unintentionally splashed on skin and eyes. 
  • While working with chemicals, personal protective equipment is required.
  • Work occasionally requires the use of small power tools such as screw drivers or hand tools such as hammers, trowels, paint brushes and non-power screw drivers.
  • Periodically throughout the shift and while moving from building to building or while working on building exteriors, exposed to seasonal extreme desert temperatures.
  • Frequently uses a cell phone to obtain instructions from management, and requires active listening in order to assess and understand and decode information from employees, management and customers in order to act quickly.
  • Frequently may require lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasionally may require carrying portable "backpack" vacuums.
  • Frequently involves the operation of cleaning equipment such as floor scrubbers and buffers.
  • Frequently involves pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, holding, carrying, reaching, reaching above the shoulders, stooping, bending at the waist, bending at the knees, kneeling, bending side to side, crouching, standing on step stools or small ladders,  balancing.
  • Work requires constant attention and awareness to safety, security and health issues with regard to self and employees.
