Grand Canyon University’s Career Services department is seeking a Career Advisor.  This position provides career counseling to students and/or alumni through their career exploration in order to set the stage for success and maximize student employment outcomes. Also, conveys information about the Career IMPACT Center and all resources available for career management and development.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides career counseling services to ground and online students as well as alumni, including one-on-one career advising, resume and cover letter development, interviewing techniques and strategies, job search techniques, assessments and overall career exploration.
  • Assists in the development of educational and professional programs/workshops and seminars for the benefit of our students and alumni, i.e. resume writing, success in workplace, professional social media etiquette, etc.   
  • Develops, prepares and delivers career development presentations and timely topics to GCU departments and students.
  • Assists in planning and promoting of Career Fairs, College events and participates in presiding over workshops.
  • May assist in developing student internships and externships as necessary.
  • May frequently be asked to attend GCU events and functions outside normal office hours. 
  • Ensures student worker, student and alumni information remains confidential.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a field related to behavioral sciences, counseling, or human resources or similar discipline from an accredited institution is required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • The combination of relevant work experience and education may be substituted upon approval of the supervisor.
  • Two years related experience such as a placement office, staffing agency or other related recruiting or counseling experience.  Prior experience in a University career center or other career center working with a diverse group of students, staff, alumni, the public, etc. is helpful.
  • Excellent communication skills with a superior command of the English language.
  • Enthusiastic and outgoing with a positive attitude.
  • Thorough understanding of University protocol, policies and procedures.
  • Capable of completing assignments in a self-directed manner with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent customer orientation with a focus on students.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships.
  • Exemplary computer skills and proficiency with software such as MS Office, dynamic web applications, multi-media, graphics, etc.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills with an attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish or another language is helpful.
  • Familiarity with the use of social media for purposes of advertising career services events, jobs, university branding, etc.
  • Ability to work well with a diverse group of students and individuals.
  • Ability to prioritize, cope with changing deadlines and manage multiple activities.
  • Provide a positive example to students by supporting the University’s Doctrinal Statement, Ethical Position Statement and Mission of Grand Canyon University.
