Job Description

Grand Canyon University’s College of Science, Engineering and Technology is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Lab Supervisor.  This position is under the direction of the Lab Manager and oversees the day to day operations of the assigned physical sciences/engineering lab sections. 

Responsibilities:

  • Participates in the development and implementation of unit procedures and work methods.  Makes recommendations to improve unit efficiency including recommendations on staff requirements.
  • Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others for assigned discipline.  Provides technical guidance and assistance concerning work methods, the use of equipment and techniques and the analysis of results.
  • Reviews, tests, evaluates and modifies equipment and methodology.
  • Directs or personally performs the timely preparation, set up and issuing of materials, chemicals, and equipment for use in student laboratory demonstrations, experiments, exercises and exams.
  • Performs complex skilled technical duties to assure efficient lab operations
  • Ensures compliance with safety regulations in the use of equipment.
  • Assists with establishment of safety policies and work procedures to comply with all federal/state regulations.
  • Ensures proper storage, handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Assists with training and development of lab staff.
  • Assists with establishment of inventory management procedures; trains all lab staff in inventory/stocking procedures.
  • Updates applicable inventory management system; maintains and manages upgrades needed to system.
  • Establishes maintenance schedule for all lab equipment (including audiovisual equipment) to ensure operational readiness; ensures compliance with schedule.
  • Establishes lab space to ensure adequate preparation space and use of equipment and materials; ensures lab space meets ergonomic and safety guidelines.
  • Documents lab preparation procedures for all curriculum experiments for use by lab staff.
  • Assists with feedback on changes/updates to curriculum experiments to college designated faculty and curriculum development team member to ensure experiment meets academic learning outcomes and safety regulations.
  • Procures supplies and equipment; researches products, prepares and analyzes bids for approval by lab manager, initiates orders for required items, receives shipments and verifies contents.
  • Assembles, tests and installs new equipment or instruments.
  • Provides general support for the lab facility including observing and submitting work order for problems related to leaks, hazards, lighting and overall appearance.
  • Provide a positive example to students by supporting the University’s Doctrinal Statement, Ethical Position Statement and Mission of Grand Canyon University.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in assigned lab discipline.
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience in lab operations.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and equipment of college science department laboratory program.
  • Knowledge of subject matter and theoretical principles in chemistry/biology/etc.
  • Knowledge of equipment, materials, supplies and laboratory methods, practices and techniques used in lab discipline.
  • Ability to correctly and efficiently set up lab equipment and materials used in exercises and experiments.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations involving lab operations and the use of hazardous materials.
  • Knowledge of advanced mathematics.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in assigned lab discipline.
  • Experience in the development and delivery of laboratory programs, including reagents, supplies and other materials that would be necessary to sustain a diverse college laboratory program.
  • Experience in operating, maintaining and repairing analytical instruments in a lab and stockroom setting.
  • Experience in implementing policies and procedures to comply with environment, health and safety regulations.
