Grand Canyon University’s College of Science, Engineering and Technology is currently hiring an Engineering Shop Manager. This position is responsible for overseeing the operation of the machine and fabrication shop used for Engineering teaching labs and engineering projects. This can involve equipment procurement, inventory, maintenance, calibration, repair, and lab compatibility with the national standards and safety codes. The Shop Manager is responsible for the management and operation of the Engineering shops. Duties include: 1) to give safety training to students and faculty on the use of various equipment and maintain a clean and safe working environment, 2) to support the laboratory courses by ensuring that the equipment and software are well maintained, 3) to assist and supervise students in the fabrication of parts and devices for their senior-design projects, 4) to obtain quotes to purchase equipment for the Department, 5) to keep the laboratory computers and equipment updated, 6) to organize and keep track of all equipment and tools of the Department.

Responsibilities

  • Manage day to day operations of the shop, ensuring safe operation of equipment and use.
  • Instruct students and instructional assistants in shop procedures, methods, use of tools and safety.
  • Explain the fundamentals of appropriate and safe behavior in a machine shop and enforce the shop rules.
  • Operate and maintain equipment.
  • Procure and install all needed equipment and supplies.
  • Support Senior Engineering projects.
  • Troubleshoot problems that arise on equipment, including milling machines, lathes, and software.
  • Work closely with faculty to ensure the shops support the engineering curricula.
  • Recommend and execute best practices in shop education and development.
  • Liaison with GCU entrepreneurship and innovation initiatives.
  • Provide a positive example to students by supporting the University’s Doctrinal Statement, Ethical Position Statement and Mission of Grand Canyon University.
  • Perform related duties as assigned and needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required in Engineering or Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering preferred.
  • Certifications by NIMS or another accrediting body.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ of engineering shop experience working with a variety of engineering equipment, software and machines.  
  • Experience with sheet metal shop, woodworking shop, welding, casting, molding, forming, joining and finishing.
  • Possess high level proficiency in the use of Cad Cam software and SolidWorks.
  • Leadership experience managing an engineering shop and supervising projects.
  • Thorough knowledge of shop safety.
  • Proficient with computer software including MS Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of prototyping.
  • Knowledge of 3D printing.
  • Knowledge of stress testing, fatigue analysis.
  • Proficient with computer software including MS Office Suite.
  • Provide a positive example to students by supporting the University’s Doctrinal Statement, Ethical Position Statement and Mission of Grand Canyon University.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience procuring shop equipment, software, and machines.
  • Minimum of 10 years of engineering shop experience working with a variety of engineering equipment, software and machines.
