Grand Canyon University is currently hiring for a new Director of Diversity.  This position will be responsible for advancing GCU’s organizational diversity strategy. Primary activities include developing and promoting diversity efforts through student clubs/organizations, academic departments, and operational areas to further GCU’s diversity story. The Director embraces collaborative and engaging relationships with both internal partners including students, faculty, and staff, and external partners to provide effective leadership in the coordination of all diversity-related programs and initiatives such as mentorship, external partnerships, inclusivity projects, and diversity conversations/ collaborations which help GCU achieve targeted outcomes.

This position reports directly to the GCU Diversity Chair/Officer who is managed by the Executive Leadership team.   


  • Develop the Diversity Center/Office collaboratively with stakeholders, including Student Affairs, the GCU Diversity Council, and Executive Leadership team.
  • Build upon existing programs/effort while acting as a champion for new initiatives and further expand current strategies and increase campus awareness and involvement.
  • Partner with Academic Compliance, Human Resources, the Diversity Officer, and the General Counsel to continue the commitment to diversity by building awareness, providing access, promoting cultural understanding and providing trend intelligence concerning diversity best practices.
  • Partner with various campus constituencies to develop practices which support the success of a diversity efforts supporting internal and external constituencies.
  • Develop and monitor partnerships with business leaders and advocacy groups, building alliances through shared goals and diversity conversations/forums.
  • Design and implement methods to assess diversity strategy effectiveness and conduct and collect ongoing research on best practices and recommend strategies for continuous improvement.
  • Maintain awareness and knowledge of current best practices; existing and pending regulations; and relevant legislation.
  • Understands factors that impact implementation and management of effective diversity change efforts and successfully navigates diversity initiatives through the barriers.
  • Ensure information on office websites and training material are current, relevant and compliant with law and practice; and further ensures compliance with all university policies and procedures.
  • Effectively manage budgetary and resource allocations.
  • Sustain and advance the organization’s cultural thought leadership on diversity and work collaboratively with management to influence the adoption of industry leading diversity practices.
  • Develop key milestones; Prepare reports and presentations, including metrics, ROI, accomplishments, as well as future activities and strategies. Provide metrics that show the results of diversity actions and ensure there is transparency to all stakeholders.


  • Master’s Degree required, preferably in field of business or public administration, psychology, or social sciences.
  • Experience in the field of equity, diversity, and/or equal opportunity and in developing constructive working relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds - all aspects of human diversity.
  • Should have an interest in and understanding of the current challenges and barriers in supporting diversity ideology, values and initiatives, and the challenges connected to encouraging pluralism.
  • Experience in diversity infrastructures with a steadfast commitment to equity, justice, and inclusion.
  • Successful track record of leading projects in a multi-stakeholder environment as an innovative and inspirational change agent.
  • Advanced interpersonal and intercultural communication skills; peace and conflict negotiation skills; a keen sense of diplomacy, confidentiality, and tact. Capacity to build consensus and to support and reconcile competing interests while promoting equitable solutions to difficult problems
  • Ability to effectively and creatively solve problems and lead others through transactional and transformational learning and change.
  • Knowledge of and experience implementing successful recruitment and retention strategies for traditionally underrepresented populations.
  • Ability to collaborate and work creatively within a team/community environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a shared governance environment.
  • Demonstrated record of collecting and using data to assess the effectiveness of initiatives and to achieve measurable results.
  • Visionary leadership with proven ability for strategic planning, campus programming, and community development to accentuate evidence-based best practices related to equity, justice, inclusion, and cross-cultural competencies.
  • Ability to facilitate presentations and address large campus and community audiences; teaching experience at the collegiate level is valued.
  • Knowledge of applicable Federal and State, regulatory guidelines and laws and a strong command of contemporary diversity, inclusion & multi-culturalism concepts and issues.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills with all levels of employees, management, and community leaders.
  • Consistently demonstrates integrity and ethical behavior congruent with Christian values in all transactions and relationships; Adheres to the regulatory and legal environment of higher education; is openly accountable for actions, decisions and outcomes.
  • Displays willingness to make decisions; Exhibits sound and accurate judgment; Supports and explains reasoning for decisions; Includes appropriate people in decision-making process; Makes timely decisions.
  • Provide a positive example to students by supporting the University’s Doctrinal Statement, Ethical Position Statement and Mission of Grand Canyon University.
