Grand Canyon University is currently seeking a part time Assistant Speech Coach for its Speech and Debate Team.  This position will assist the Director in meeting individually with competitors, assist in conducting practices, aid in speech case construction, judging at tournaments, and performing administrative tasks related to the team’s budget and travel schedule. This position requires that the candidate attend weekly practice, and travels with the team to 10 tournaments per year. The ideal candidate will have an excellent track record of competition or coaching success in NPDA "Parliamentary" speech. This position also requires that the individual is an instructional assistant or adjunct instructor in one course in the College of Humanities & Social Sciences for the fall and spring semesters. Please note, this is a part-time 9 month position.


  • Coordinates and supervises speech and debate practice and training sessions, providing robust feedback to improve skills.
  • Coordinates research and practicum assignments to develop growth in the areas of performance, research and competitive strategy.
  • Teaches Speech and Debate team members theories and skills underlying in each competition/tournament event.
  • Travels to and from scheduled tournaments, providing on-site judging and coaching. Supervises team members to ensure a high standard of conduct during tournaments and travel.
  • Fosters skills in research, organization and filing of evidence for building cases on a given subject matter.
  • Reviews team members’ speeches, cases and literary pieces to assess for coherent and convincing messages.
  • Encourages community service speaking opportunities to apply forensic skills in life and careers.
  • Continuously assesses strengths and weaknesses of the program for improvement, and executes applicable approved recommendations.
  • Assists with managing hosted tournaments.
  • Meets with prospective students interested in the Speech and Debate Program. Follows up with potential team members as needed.
  • Teaches a one course load for fall and spring semesters as assigned.
  • Stays informed and up-to-date on rules, procedures and judging standards for forensic speech and debate events.
  • Administrative responsibilities as assigned; i.e., ensuring that all tournament travel arrangements are confirmed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required in relevant discipline.
  • 2 years of competition or coaching experience in NPDA speech.
  • Excellent track record of competition or coaching success in NPDA speech events.
  • Good verbal communications and active listening skills.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills.
  • Good writing skills.
  • Ability to coach and mentor students to encourage full engagement as team members.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software and database management software, and ability to retrieve information/data and create a variety of reports.
  • Good problem solving, analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to adapt the coaching style to meet the needs of a diverse program.
  • Ability to work to high productivity standards with limited supervision.
  • Provide a positive example to students by supporting the University’s Doctrinal Statement, Ethical Position Statement and Mission of Grand Canyon University.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 4 years of competition or coaching experience in intercollegiate speech and debate
  • Qualified to elimination rounds at the National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence or National Parliamentary Speech Association Championship Tournament.
